Marilyn Goes ‘Type 1’ at Heritage Auctions

Six photographs of Marilyn will go under the hammer at Heritage Auctions this Sunday, April 7. These are Type 1 photos, developed from original negatives within 2 years of the original picture being taken.

Shown above at left is a candid photo signed by Marilyn in blue ink, from the collection of Frieda Hull, a member of the Monroe Six (a group of young fans based in New York), taken on March 9, 1955 at the world premiere of East of Eden at the Astor Theatre on Broadway. And at right is a rear-view image of Marilyn singing ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President‘, captured by LIFE photographer Bill Ray at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962.

At left, Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio on their ‘honeymoon tour’ of Japan, from DiMaggio’s personal collection. However, this photo was not taken when they first arrived in Tokyo on February 1st, 1954 as the listing states, but at Iwakuni Airport on February 11. And at right, Marilyn and Arthur Miller arriving at Idlewild Airport, photographed by Sam Goldstein on November 21, 1956. The newlyweds were returning from their four-month stay in London, where Marilyn filmed The Prince and the Showgirl, and Arthur oversaw the West End production of A View From the Bridge.

And finally, Marilyn and Tom Ewell at left, in a still from The Seven Year Itch (1955); and at right, Marilyn in her opening scene from the unfinished Something’s Got To Give (1962.) Both images were captured by Frank Powolny, studio photographer at Twentieth Century-Fox, who also shot some of Marilyn’s most famous glamour portraits during the early 1950s.

UPDATE:

The signed East of Eden photo sold for $20,000, while the ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ photo reached almost $11,000.
