Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is the subject of a new podcast episode in Margo Donahue’s Book Vs. Movie series. The 1953 movie has a different plotline to Anita Loos’ classic 1925 novel, and is itself based on a 1949 stage musical adaptation. However, the two main characters – diamond-loving showgirl Lorelei Lee and her sassy brunette friend Dorothy Shaw, as played by Marilyn and Jane Russell – are closer to the author’s vision.
In this ep the Margos discuss:
- The life of Anita Loos
- The setting of the book and why the 1920s was known as the flapper era
- Major changes between the novel and the 1953 film
- The cast
