Marilyn Gets Her Prince (and More) in ‘Yours Retro’

Following its recent Blu-Ray release (see here), The Prince and the Showgirl is featured in the May issue of Yours Retro (#62, with Cary Grant on the cover), as this month’s mini-poster to cut out and keep.

The artwork, which bears little relation to this charming English period comedy, was commissioned by Warner Brothers before the 1957 premiere. The studio even summoned Laurence Olivier to New York for a hasty photo session with Marilyn, prompting an awkward reunion between the reluctant co-stars. The artwork is based on photos shot by Milton Greene, and the occasion would also mark his penultimate session with Marilyn before their business partnership was acrimoniously dissolved.

Elsewhere, Frank Powolny’s iconic wartime pin-up of Betty Grable is featured, and his work with Marilyn is also mentioned. An article about legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick focuses on his long working relationship with Kay Brown, who persuaded him to purchase the screen rights to Gone With the Wind. Brown later became a leading literary agent, hosting her client Arthur Miller’s 1956 wedding to Marilyn at her New York home.

And finally, if you haven’t yet bought a copy of Yours Retro‘s excellent Marilyn special, hurry!
