Fans Celebrate Marilyn’s 97th Birthday

Fans left flowers at Marilyn’s graveside in Westwood Memorial Park yesterday, with bouquets from the Marilyn Remembered and Immortal Marilyn fan clubs, and the Marilyn Monroe Collection.

Scott Fortner shared a treasured item from his collection – a birthday card sent to Marilyn in 1959 by her half-sister, Berniece Baker Miracle.

Further afield, Marilyn Mexico paid tribute with artwork from Sergio Serrano, who also created a series of graphics for Marilyn Remembered (more here.) Sergio was inspired by the classic glamour portraits first shot 70 years ago by photographers Gene Kornman and Frank Powolny, who worked closely with Marilyn during her zenith at Twentieth Century-Fox.

Silver Technicolor toasted Marilyn from across the Atlantic…

And in the UK, there were tributes from biographer Michelle Morgan, and Marilyn’s favourite London perfumer, Floris.

Artists Alejandro Mogollo and Amanda (aka HavokMonroe) unveiled new work inspired by Marilyn’s movie costumes…

Alejandro chose the hot-pink, cutout dress designed by Dorothy Jeakins for Niagara (1953); while Amanda picked Travilla’s ‘tiger dress’ from The Seven Year Itch (1955.)

The social media pages for Sam Shaw and Douglas Kirkland offered personal insights into collaborating with the world’s most photogenic woman…

Film historians saluted Marilyn, including Christina Rice, biographer to Marilyn’s friend and co-star, Jane Russell.

Lara Gabrielle and Olympia Kiriakou have written acclaimed studies of Marion Davies and Carole Lombard, Marilyn’s predecessors in the pantheon of Hollywood blondes.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro – who referenced Niagara in his remake of Noir classic Nightmare Alley – chimed in with praise for Marilyn’s performance in Don’t Bother to Knock.

Singer Deana Martin – daughter of Something’s Got to Give star Dean Martin – also remembered Marilyn yesterday.
