‘Marilyn: The Woman Behind the Icon’ in Sydney, Australia

After touring Europe, Marilyn: The Woman Behind the Icon – an exhibition of items from the collection of Ted Stampfer – is now on display at Sydney Town Hall in Australia until September 24th. Among the artefacts are items of clothing owned by Marilyn (including a pair of white capri pants) as well as personal property, documents and photos.

The venue’s wall decor features a range of quotes attributed to Marilyn, but not all are authentic. There is also a number of replica exhibits, including copies of Marilyn’s wedding ring from Joe DiMaggio and her ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ dress, plus vintage items from the era though not owned by Marilyn herself (e.g. an ashtray from the Stork Club, where Marilyn dined with Joe in 1954.) Unfortunately, the item descriptions don’t always make these distinctions clear.

Here is a selection of highlights, beginning with Norma Jeane’s childhood and teenage years…

Charting Marilyn’s rise to fame…

Her Hollywood heyday…

The New York years, marriage to Arthur Miller, and career highlights…

And her final years…
