Remembering Marilyn in ‘Yours Retro’

Marilyn is among the screen goddesses whose beauty secrets are featured in the July issue (#64) of UK nostalgia mag Yours Retro.

Her rather unusual skincare regime and diet tips, first revealed in 1952 (see here) are mentioned alongside Norma Jeane’s transition from brunette to blonde in 1946.

Marilyn was a honey blonde until 1948 (as seen in Laszlo Willinger’s pin-up shot below), when she briefly went platinum for Ladies of the Chorus, but kept her tresses long until 1951, when she turned strawberry blonde.

Then while filming Niagara in the summer of 1952, she adopted the tousled platinum crop which thereafter became her signature look.

Marilyn also appears in this month’s cover story on Robert Mitchum, her leading man in River of No Return. They first met a decade earlier, when ‘Mitch’ worked alongside Norma Jeane’s husband Jim Dougherty at the Lockheed munitions plant.

In 1959, he was offered the lead role of cowboy Gay Langland in The Misfits by director John Huston. After reading Arthur Miller’s script several times, however, the actor returned it to his agent, complaining that it made no sense. In any case, he had already played a similar role in Nicholas Ray’s The Lusty Men (1952), alongside Susan Hayward.

And finally, Marilyn’s tragic death on August 5th, 1962 is the subject of this month’s ‘Moment in Time’ feature.
