‘The Misfits’ on 4K UHD Blu-Ray

Marilyn’s last completed movie, The Misfits divides audiences like no other. For some (myself included) it’s an elegiac swansong; for some, it’s an artistic misfire. However, it’s generally accepted that the onscreen drama cannot be easily separated from its troubled production.

First released on Blu-Ray in 2011, The Misfits is now presented in a 2-disc 4K UHD Mediabook format by Germany’s Capelight Pictures, including a fully illustrated, 24pp booklet with an essay by Lucas Wenczik. A single disc DVD remaster is also available, but without the booklet.

On both versions, the film can be viewed in the original English or dubbed into German, and subtitles are available in either language. Unfortunately, the extras are limited to the US and German trailers.

I watched the DVD last night, and – while I’m no expert on specs – in my opinion, the restoration is truly impressive. Hopefully a future reissue from another company (like Criterion or Kino Lorber) could include the PBS documentary, Making The Misfits.

UPDATE: An English-only version of Capelight’s Misfits reissue on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K & UHD Blu-Ray is now available for pre-order via UK store HMV, for a September 18 release.
