Redrawing Marilyn’s ‘Thousand Faces’ in Italy

With a gorgeous cover shot by Douglas Kirkland, Una Vita Negata (‘A Life Denied’) is one of two Marilyn-inspired novels published in Italy in 2023 (following actor Filippo Timi’s Marilyn.)

“In this novel, thanks to the author’s work of identification, we will have the opportunity to get to know Marilyn from a new point of view: hers. No one was ever really interested in what was happening to her during the darkest periods of her life, this novel aims to express the most poignant feelings that characterised an iconic character of the twentieth century. Marilyn was an intellectual, a poet, an activist who fought for women. Through a game of epistolary exchanges between her and other characters such as Ella Fitzgerald, Jayne Mansfield and Rudolph Valentino, we will get to know a tormented, oppressed, suffering but at the same time combative and hopeful woman of finally being able to show the real Norma Jeane to the world. A woman capable of openly challenging the film industry of the 1950s … A novel that will guide the reader on a journey through the sphere of feelings and emotions and that wants to put aside the gossip and fiction that have always surrounded her figure, to give a new image of her in a completely different light.”

In the world of comic books, meanwhile, Marilyn’s ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ costume is prominently featured in the cover art for the latest instalment of the long-running Diabolik series. The Thousand Faces of Eva Kant takes a closer look at the eponymous jewel thief, through “five emblematic stories of her evolution, as a woman and as a criminal.” (And let’s not forget that Lorelei Lee – the ‘blonde bandit’ played by Marilyn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – also pulled off a diamond heist, albeit unwittingly …)
