On January 14, 1954 – 70 years ago this month – Marilyn married Joe DiMaggio in a surprise ceremony at City Hall in San Francisco. The upcoming anniversary is featured in the latest issue of UK magazine All About History (#138, dated February 2024.)
You can read more about Marilyn and Joe’s wedding here and at The Marilyn Archive.

Marilyn is also mentioned (twice) in an eight-page article on the history of Hollywood: firstly, the ‘subway grate’ scene from The Seven Year Itch – “one of the most emblematic images of Hollywood glamour in the 1950s” – appears on a timeline of key moments in a century of cinema.

And secondly, Marilyn is one of ten famous faces cited as ‘Hollywood Influencers’, alongside Charlie Chaplin and Marlon Brando. The other women on the list are actress and producer Mary Pickford; screenwriter Frances Marion; and director Dorothy Arzner.
While Marilyn wasn’t a power player on their level, the article cites “the way in which she played both with and against her sexualised image,” adding that her tragic death “put Hollywood’s treatment of its stars in the spotlight.”
