A retrospective for Douglas Kirkland – celebrity portraitist extraordinaire – opens at the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles today, through February 24. Selected images from his 1961 shoot with Marilyn for Look magazine are featured, alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot and many others who posed for Kirkland during his lengthy career.
His widow, Francoise Kirkland, spoke about the exhibition to Eye of Photography …
“Douglas died just over a year ago. Both an eternity and yesterday.
I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful that the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles is putting on this historic exhibition.
David Fahey is a legend in his own right and his gallery is one of the best photographic venue in the world. But what makes it even more interesting is that, like Douglas, David has surrounded himself with young creative people whose opinion he encourages and respects. Their influence allows a few surprises among the classic Kirkland images.
I always thought our mariage was a menage a trois: Douglas, Francoise and the Camera, his ever present muse and companion.
Douglas left me his life’s work and passion. Quite a legacy. Lucky me!
Thank you to the entire Fahey/Klein Gallery team for your inspiration.”
