‘Iconic Avedon’ Brings Marilyn to Paris

Following last year’s #Avedon100 celebrations, a retrospective for photographer Richard Avedon has reached Gagosian Paris. Iconic Avedon includes the ‘Dancing Marilyn’ montage which also graced the cover of Gagosian Quarterly‘s Summer 2023 issue, as well as his famous ‘Sad Marilyn.’

“Avedon’s most incisive portraits manifest his uncanny ability to elicit the singular vitality of his sitters, inscribing their charged essences—even those of the already famous—in decisive frames extracted from the larger arc of living history. His portrayals of Marian Anderson, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles are as indelible as they are timeless … He also recorded incomparable images of Charlie Chaplin, Jacqueline Kennedy, Andy Warhol, and Tina Turner at pivotal moments in their storied lives … Iconic Avedon , with exhibition design by Cécile Degos, follows the 2023 exhibition Avedon 100 at the gallery in New York, which featured photographs selected by over 150 prominent artists, designers, musicians, writers, curators, and fashion world representatives, who elaborate in the accompanying catalog on the impact of Avedon’s work today.”

Supermodel Karlie Kloss – who recreated Marilyn’s ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ number from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for a 2017 Swarovski commercial – was among the attendees on opening night, as WWD reports. The exhibition is open through to March 2nd on rue de Ponthieu.
