‘Hey, Marilyn’: Guitar Pop Nostalgia for Monroe

Jack Antonoff – producer to Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde – has just released a new album named for his own band, Bleachers. On one track, ‘Hey Joe,’ he briefly references Marilyn…

“Hey Joe, what do you know?
We’re off the bridge, all Marilyn Monroe
Oh, hey Joe, what is called? That’s right
‘Giving up a piece of you to let go’ …”

In his AP review, Mark Kennedy describes ‘Hey Joe’ as “a sort of 2024 response to Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Mrs. Robinson,’ with Antonoff talking across generations, discussing war and fathers and Marilyn Monroe. ‘We tried giving peace a chance but didn’t know what it is,’ he sings.”

Meanwhile, Boston band My Silent Bravery – fronted by Matthew Wade – have a song named ‘Marilyn Monroe‘ on their new double album, Silence & Bravery, which also trades in nostalgia. Describing the track as “upbeat and bouncy,” Jon Stojan writes for Rolling Stone: “Wade’s mission to spread positivity reverberates through each chord …”

“No they don’t make ’em like Marilyn Monroe
So beautiful, moving in slo-mo
Wind blowin’ that dress in a photo
They don’t do it like Marilyn Monroe …”
