‘All About Eve’ at the Picturehouse

All About Eve is showing at Picturehouse cinemas in London and across the UK next week, as part of a month-long classic film series starring Bette Davis (also featured in Jezebel) and Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce, Johnny Guitar), plus their only film together, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

“A spellbinding film with stunning performances (you will even spot an early cameo from Marilyn Monroe) … All About Eve is a triumph of acting, writing, and directing, everything comes together perfectly in this dark, perhaps cynical but gripping look at the inner workings of the entertainment industry; its process, its stars and the cut-throat competition involved in making it to the ‘big time.'”

– Mary Gascoyne, CineChat

All About Eve first opened in London on December 7, 1950. An original UK quad poster – later altered to boost the Marilyn factor – can be purchased for £285 from MEM – Cinema & Music Memorabilia.

“The film featured a heavyweight cast including Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders etc & indeed six ‘stars’ are depicted along the bottom rim. However, as comparison with the original Quad shows, the Quad we have has been significantly ‘doctored’. First a sticker with some further hyping script has been added to the upper border. Secondly, along with co-stars Gary Merrill & Hugh Marlowe a further sticker has been added with the name of ‘Marilyn Monroe’ in blue. Although Monroe had a small role in the film she was never originally featured on the printed poster. The enterprising cinema manager who adapted this poster, however, went further, including a b/w magazine picture of Monroe above the ‘Eve’ script & furthermore obliterating Celeste Holm’s image with another picture of Ms Monroe on the bottom rim. So although this is an original first release 1950 Quad it looks as if this poster was adapted several years later for a re-release viewing once Monroe was better established. A fascinating piece of creative marketing which shows the importance of Marilyn Monroe’s sex appeal!”
