Some Like It Hot is showing at La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin in Paris on Thursday, 10 October, at 4:00 pm. This 4K digital screening is hosted by Ciné-Maille, with a panel discussion focusing on Orry Kelly’s Oscar-winning designs for the 1959 comedy classic.
The eight costumes created for Marilyn’s role as jazz singer Sugar Kane are examined in a blog post for Classic Critics Corner.
“In Some Like It Hot, Marilyn Monroe’s vintage wardrobe ranges from black dresses, to sequinned gowns, to silk pyjamas, and an adorable vintage swimsuit.
Although the period for the film is 1920s art deco flapper, yet Marilyn Monroe’s dresses are extremely slinky and fitted, the opposite of the boyish flat-chested shape that was popular in the 1920’s, which is more accurately captured in Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon’s undercover girl musician dresses.
For shoes, Monroe wears a variety of 1950s pumps and high heels that match her dresses. Not surprising you never see her wear flats! Her fashion accessories include glittering statement diamond and pearl earrings, as well as gorgeous fur stoles, and shimmery translucent shawls.
She also has a number of stunning vintage cloche hats (which is French for ‘bell’).This style was popular in the early 1920s-1930s. Her retro hats, in a variety of colors and trimming of beads and lace, feathers, or a veil, are coordinated with her outfits.
To finish her look, Marilyn’s hair is styled in perfect retro curls and she adds her signature red lipstick. Thus her vintage style outfits are a unique bubbling cocktail of 1950s style meets 1920s style.”
Following the Paris screening, Some Like It Hot is coming to the Olympia in L’Isle Jourdain on Saturday, 12 October, on Saturday, 12 October, as part of a Billy Wilder double bill.
Although The Apartment is showing first, it was made after Some Like It Hot – and is equally acclaimed, although much bleaker. Marilyn attended a preview in Beverly Hills on 21 June, 1960, burying the hatchet with Wilder after a very public spat. Her escort that evening was Yves Montand (see here.)
Some Like It Hot will also be showing at the Coeur d’Or in Bourg Saint Maurice next Tuesday, 15 October; and at Les 400 Coups in Angers on Wednesday, 23 October. All screenings are in the 4K restoration also used for the Criterion Collection DVD and Blu-Ray.
