Marilyn Brings ‘Women Power’ to Italy

Marilyn joins the ‘female universe’ depicted by Magnum photographers in WOMEN POWER, a group exhibition now open until September 21 at the Museo Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme, near Padua in Northern Italy.

Shown above, Marilyn shooting the iconic ‘subway scene’ from The Seven Year Itch in New York (Elliott Erwitt, 1954); landing in Illinois, en route to celebrate Abraham Lincoln in Bement (Eve Arnold, 1955); and filming the ‘courthouse scene’ for The Misfits in Reno, Nevada (Inge Morath, 1960.)

“The exhibition is divided into six thematic sections that explore the family context, growth, identity, the myths of beauty and fame, political battles and war. Each of these themes is represented by works by some of the most important Magnum photographers, including Inge Morath, Eve Arnold … ranging from portraits of Marilyn Monroe to those of FARC fighters in Colombia … While celebrating women’s contributions to photography, WOMEN POWER also includes shots by famous photographers such as Robert Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt … who have been able to narrate the female condition by bearing witness to the challenges linked to women’s rights.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a book, WOMEN POWER, edited by curators Walter Guadagnini and Monica Poggi. Shown above, Marilyn shooting another Misfits scene, by Morath; and below, reading her Seven Year Itch script in a portrait and contact sheet by Erwitt.

Meanwhile in Milan, Marilyn graces the poster for Eve’s Women, an Eve Arnold retrospective now open through May at Podbieldski Contemporary.
