Julien’s Hosts ‘Happy 99th Birthday’ Auction for Marilyn

Bidding is now open for ‘Happy 99th Birthday, Marilyn!‘, an online sale at Julien’s Auctions, closing on Thursday, June 12.

In the first of a series of posts, I’m looking at some of the photographs on offer – including this 1953 portrait by Frank Powolny, in a later print stamped ‘The Silver Screen, New York City’ on the verso.

SOLD for $650

Two black-and-white negatives shot by Ed Cronenweth, house photographer at Columbia Pictures, in 1948, when Marilyn made Ladies of the Chorus during her six-month stint at the studio. At left, Marilyn with makeup artist Fred Fredericks; and at right, from a yoga series.

Yoga negative + later print SOLD for $350

Contact sheet prints and negatives from Marilyn’s 1950 shoot with photographer Earl Leaf, showing her standing by the fireside and browsing a bookshelf at agent Johnny Hyde’s Holmby Hills estate.

Fireside negative + contact sheet SOLD for $455

Bookshelf negative + contact sheet SOLD for $1,170

This 1970s print of a rare Laszlo Willinger photo shows Marilyn wearing the same swimsuit seen in another shot by Earl Leaf.

SOLD for $650

An original sepia print from photographer David ‘Dave’ Cicero, with a pencilled annotation on the verso which reads in part: ‘Marilyn Monroe on the beach, 1951.’

SOLD for $585

A small original print by an unknown photographer, showing Marilyn waving from an open convertible, as Grand Marshall for the 1952 Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

SOLD for $650

A contact sheet showing Marilyn dining at Sardi’s Restaurant in New York in 1954 with newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons, actor David Wayne, and others; from the personal files of photographer Milton Greene.

Sold separately, two more contact sheets by Milton Greene, from a studio sitting with Marilyn and the French entertainer, Maurice Chevalier.

SOLD for $455 each

An original slide that has been colourised, showing Marilyn at the East of Eden premiere in March 1955, attributed to photographer Eve Arnold.

SOLD for $910

A pocket-sized issue of Picture Scope magazine from May 1955. Marilyn graces the cover in an early ’50s glamour pose. Inside there’s a four-page spread featuring photo manipulations by Arthur ‘Weegee’ Fellig – based on his poolside shoot with Marilyn at Jones Beach, NY, back in 1949.
