Marilyn Goes to Bat for Paris

Marilyn is once again the poster girl for the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, celebrating French and American movies in Paris this week, from June 17-23.

She has been the festival’s unofficial mascot for 12 years now, with an Elliott Erwitt photo from The Misfits inspiring this year’s artwork.

This scene was shot on location at Mia’s Restaurant in Dayton, Nevada. As Marilyn showed off her paddle ball skills, director John Huston and co-star Montgomery Clift were also visible.

The bearded man seen near Marilyn was 56-year-old Rex Bell, a former star of cowboy movies turned lieutenant governor of Nevada, and husband of silent screen icon Clara Bow. He passed away on July 4, 1962 – just a month before Marilyn died.

French fan Jacques Le Roux spotted this poster in Paris today, and shared it on the Marilyn Remembered Facebook group: “She’s all around town and that feels good!”

This year’s festival includes a ‘Focus on Marilyn Monroe‘ strand, beginning with a reading party for Marilyn: Shadow and Light at 4 pm on Saturday, June 21. (Norman Rosten’s 1973 memoir, originally titled Marilyn: The Untold Story, was reissued in French in 2022.)

And finally, The Misfits is showing at the Cinéma Mac-Mahon on Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 pm. Both events will be hosted by the author and film studies professor, Marie-Camille Bouchindomme.
