The Asphalt Jungle, which turns 75 this year, is showing at the Cinéma L’Aiglon in the Orne area of Normandy on Sunday, October 5, at 6 pm CEST. (Following its US premiere in May 1950, The Asphalt Jungle reached France that December. An original French poster is shown above, with an alternate title which translates as ‘When the City Sleeps.’)
“This film noir beauty from director John Huston largely set the template for Rafifi, The Killing, and all of the other classic heist flicks that would follow in its wake … as the mistress of a crooked lawyer (Louis Calhern), Marilyn Monroe is memorable in her first significant screen role. In a formidable movie year that also birthed the likes of All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard, The Asphalt Jungle managed to snag four Academy Award nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Sam Jaffe), Best Director, Best Screenplay (Huston and Ben Maddow), and Best Cinematography (Harold Rosson).”
