Some Like It Hot is showing at the historic West Newton Cinema in Jack Lemmon’s Massachusetts hometown on Saturday, October 25. Following a reception at 5:30 pm – with lemon cake and lemon martinis available as part of your ticket – film critic Ty Burr will host a conversation with members of Lemmon’s family at 6:15 pm, ahead of the screening, as part of this weekend’s centennial tribute.
“With no money and nowhere to hide, two down-on-their-luck jazz musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) masquerade as members of an all-girl band, leading to romantic complications when one falls for the band’s lead singer, played by Marilyn Monroe in one of her most iconic performances.
One of the most beloved actors in movie history, Jack Lemmon (1925–2001) was born John Uhler Lemmon III, in Newton, Massachusetts. He grew up in Newton Centre and attended Ward Elementary, the Rivers School, and Andover. After Harvard University, where he was president of the Hasty Pudding Club, and a brief stint in the Navy, Lemmon moved to New York City and made his start in radio and early television before transitioning to film roles.
Over five decades and more than sixty films, Lemmon built a career as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, known for his witty, relatable ‘everyman’ persona. Lemmon’s collaborations with director Billy Wilder produced some of his most celebrated films, including Some Like It Hot (1959) and Best Picture-winner The Apartment (1960), both considered among the greatest comedies ever made.
Special guests include Courtney Lemmon (Jack’s daughter) and her husband Peter McCrea; Chris Lemmon (Jack’s son) and his wife Gina Raymond (appearing live via Zoom); and granddaughter Sydney Lemmon.”
