Marilyn’s Swiss Comedy Triple in Geneva

Geneva will get a double dose of Marilyn at Les Cinémas Du Grütli on Tuesday, December 23, with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at 2pm and The Seven Year Itch at 4pm.

“In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one devours men, the other diamonds. And Marilyn sings that they are her best friends. Everything in this Howard Hawks classic is irresistible.” – Guillemette Odicino, Télérama

“Billy Wilder was not kind to The Seven Year Itch following the censorship that altered the original story. It was, however, a public triumph, and the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe’s dress being ‘blown up’ by the draft from a subway grate has become one of the most iconic images in Hollywood cinema.” – Nicolas Caïssa, French Cinematheque

And Some Like It Hot is coming up on Sunday, December 27 at 8:45 pm, as part of a classic comedy series with repeat screenings scheduled for the new year.

“We all know the line that closes the film: ‘Nobody’s perfect.’ And we’re less familiar with the one that sums up a large part of Billy Wilder’s philosophy, spoken by a cross-dressing Jack Lemmon: Women, he says to his pal Tony Curtis, are ‘a whole different sex.’ Never has one of life’s great truths been expressed so concisely … The film is a marvel of rhythm, invention, and gaiety. If Marilyn is magical, it’s Lemmon we remember.” – Pierre Murat
