Marilyn’s two classic comedies with director Billy Wilder are showing as an afternoon double bill on BBC2 in the UK on Saturday, December 27. Both films have earned a 5-star rating in the prestigious Christmas issue of Radio Times magazine, and will be available to stream via iPlayer shortly after broadcast, for a 28-day period.
The Seven Year Itch (12:50 pm)
“When his wife goes away, publisher Richard (Tom Ewell) begins to wonder what it would be like to have an affair with the sex bomb (Marilyn Monroe) who’s just moved in upstairs. So begins the pleasure and pain of fantasy layered on fantasy, as Ewell imagines himself and Monroe in various amorous situations. This sassy, sexy comedy is rip-roaringly funny, and famous for the scene in which Marilyn lets her white dress billow in the breeze from an air vent.”
Some Like It Hot (2:30 pm)
“After two musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) witness 1929’s St Valentine’s Day Massacre, they go on the run, donning drag and changing their names to Daphne and Josephine so that they can join an all-female band bound for Miami. Before long, they’ve both fallen for sexy singer Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe). The chemistry between Curtis, Lemmon and Monroe is wondrous to behold and this sparkling farce fizzes with iconic Hollywood moments. With George Raft.”
