Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is showing at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) in Canberra, Australia on Saturday, January 24. The evening’s entertainment begins at 6pm with a live performance from Alice Cottee’s cabaret trio Dollface, with Blondes following at 8pm as part of Hot Summer Nights, a weekly series perfect for warmer climes.
“The pleasures of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes run deep frame by frame. Harry J. Wild’s effulgent Technicolor cinematography, Travilla’s array of glamorous gowns as worn by Monroe and Russell … Their expertly calibrated performances — full of personality, comic timing, and musical skill — in comparison to the forgettable supporting men bolster their absolute power over the film … and they entirely avoid Hays Code-inflicted moralising consequences, wearing their man-trapping successes with ebullient, glamorous triumph.”
