‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ in Lithuania

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is showing on Monday, February 9, at Forum Cinemas in Lithuania’s two largest cities: Kaunas (at 6:30 pm), and the capital, Vilnius (at 7:00 pm.) Hosted by KINFO Cinema Club, the film will be shown in English, with subtitles in Lithuanian.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was created as a spectacle for big cinemas – with rich Technicolor, luxurious costumes and choreography, the scale of which is revealed only on the big screen.

The plot centres on two showgirls who embark on a trip to Paris, where romance is intertwined with diamonds, secret pursuits, a missing tiara, and comic intrigue. The film deliberately does not strive for psychological depth—instead, it functions as an entertainment mechanism that maintains pace, mood, and visual pleasure. This tone has become one of the main reasons for the film’s enduring popularity.

Although the film used only three songs from the original Broadway musical by Jule Styne and Leo Robin, the screen version was supplemented with new musical numbers. The works of Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Adamson were created especially for the screen.

The film’s big number, ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,’ became not only a musical highlight, but also one of the most recognisable scenes in film history. The bright red backdrop, choreography, and Marilyn Monroe’s performance later became the basis for numerous popular culture quotes and interpretations.

The character of Lorelei Lee became one of the most significant in Marilyn Monroe’s career. At first glance, this may seem like a stereotypical ‘diamond-loving blonde’, but the film deliberately plays with the expectations of the viewer and turns this image on its head. Lorelei is depicted as a strategically thinking, clever and perfectly understanding the weaknesses of those around her. It was this role that became an integral part of Marilyn Monroe’s image.”
