A Year With Marilyn Monroe, a centennial film series at Kino Kosmos in Katowice, Poland, began in January with All About Eve; and it continues at 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 14 – St. Valentine’s Day – with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, introduced by fashion historian Anna Gołkowska.
“In 2026, as part of a year-long retrospective—the flagship project of Kosmos Cinema—we invite you to film encounters with the iconic actress Marilyn Monroe. To mark the 100th anniversary of the American star’s birth, we will present 10 films in two blocks of five titles: from January to May and from August to December. Each screening will be preceded by a lecture by a specialist in the history of cinema, fashion and design, the evolution of social mores, American pop culture, and feminism in popular culture. By examining the phenomenon of Marilyn Monroe from diverse perspectives, verified by contemporary research, we will attempt to deconstruct the persistent stereotypical image of the cinematic ‘sex goddess,’ giving Norma Jeane Mortensen her rightful place in the history of world cinema and culture.”

The artwork for this flagship programme was inspired by a promotional shot from How to Marry a Millionaire, which follows on March 7. (I can’t help noticing that Marilyn’s bust has been somewhat ‘enhanced’, though!)

And next up, a detour into Marilyn’s Noir period with The Asphalt Jungle (April 23) and Niagara (May 22.) We’ll return to Kino Kosmos this summer, when the second block of Monroe classics is set to run.
