Marilyn Goes From ‘Clash’ to ‘Hot’ in Italy

Clash By Night is showing at the Palazzo Epsosizioni in Rome on Wednesday, March 11, at 8 pm, as part of ‘Fritz Lang 50,’ a month-long retrospective for the Austrian-born director. (The film’s Italian title, Mrs Doyle’s Confession, refers to the character played by Barbara Stanwyck.)

“Disillusioned by big city life, Mae Doyle returns to her hometown of Monterey, California, after a long absence. Her look and sophisticated air attract the attention of Jerry D’Amato (Paul Douglas), a good-natured if too simple fisherman she had known in her youth. Mae’s brother Joe is dating Peggy (Marilyn Monroe), a young, sexy femme who’s uncertain about the kind of relationship she would like to have with him. Peggy longs to live with the freedom and independence that she thinks mark Mae’s life … Marilyn Monroe, just before becoming a major star, makes a strong impression as the independently-minded Peggy, proving that she can act and be much more than a just a sex symbol.” – Emmanuel Levy

And Some Like It Hot is showing at Bergamo Film Meeting on Saturday, March 14 at 8 pm in Lombardy, Northern Italy, as part of a Cult Movie series.

“Prohibition-era Chicago. A pair of broke jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, inadvertently witness the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. To escape the gangsters, they dress as women and join an all-female orchestra. Hilarious. One of the greatest comedies of all time.”

CAST: Marilyn Monroe (Zucchero ‘Candito’ Kandinsky), Tony Curtis (Joe/Josephine/Shell Oil Junior), Jack Lemmon (Jerry/Daphne/Geraldine), George Raft (‘Spats’ Colombo/’Ghette’ Colombo), Pat O’Brien (il detective Mulligan)
