70 Years Ago: Marilyn in the ‘Love Nest’

The latest, extended issue of French e-zine Crazy For You is devoted to Marilyn’s twelfth movie, Love Nest (1951.) She was given a supporting role as Roberta, a flirtatious former WAC. The film’s star, June Haver, had also been the leading lady in Marilyn’s movie debut, Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! The screenplay was penned by I.A.L. Diamond, who would go on to write three more Monroe films: Let’s Make It Legal, Monkey Business, and Some Like It Hot.

Two of Marilyn’s scenes were considered quite racy at the time. Firstly, a brief sequence where she emerges from the shower in a bathtowel; and secondly, she is seen sunning herself in a polka-dot bikini. Haver would later recall that even normally jaded studio staff turned out in droves to see Marilyn strolling across the lot in her bathing suit. Her costumes were designed by Renié, and the promotional photo seen on the cover was shot by Tom Kelley, the man behind Marilyn’s nude calendar.
