70 Years Ago: Marilyn’s Midsummer Splash

The latest issue of French e-zine Crazy for You looks back to June 1951, in which Marilyn posed with other young Hollywood hopefuls for a Modern Screen magazine spread, ‘We Swam Our Way to Ciro’s,’ shot at the home of Herman Hoover, owner of Ciro’s restaurant and nightclub. That evening, she danced with Craig Hill, one of the actors from the shoot, at Ciro’s. Also in June, Marilyn was among a group of Hollywood beauties (including Dorothy Lamour) who greeted Marines disembarking the U.S.S. Manchester in Long Beach, returning from Korea.

“As always with Marilyn, the outfits she wears will lead us to other photos, to other events,” the issue notes. For Modern Screen, she wore a bathing suit from the film she had just completed, Let’s Make It Legal, also seen in other pin-up shoots. At Ciro’s, she wore the little black dress from As Young As You Feel. And in Long Beach, she wore a white halter dress first seen in her 1950 photo session with Earl Leaf. She would wear the dress again for another shoot, posing alongside a billboard for As Young As You Feel, which opened in June.
