Joe DiMaggio was born into an Italian immigrant family in 1915. His father was a fisherman in Martinez, California, in the east of the San Francisco Bay. After finding fame in baseball, Joe stayed close to his roots and named his 22-ft Chris Craft pleasure boat the Joltin’ Joe. It’s said he took Marilyn sailing in the Bay after they married in 1954.
In recent years, the Joltin’ Joe has been undergoing restoration in Martinez as part of a larger project to honour DiMaggio’s legacy and will go on display next Sunday as the town celebrates July 4th, East County Today reports.
“The Joe DiMaggio Hometown Hero Project will be displaying the famous Joltin’ Joe 22-foot Chris Craft pleasure boat starting at 10 a.m. near Field 3 of the Waterfront Park Joe DiMaggio Ballfields … The boat was donated to the City of Martinez in 1991 and restored to museum quality by the Sons of Italy, Diablo Valley Lodge #2167. Representatives of the Hometown Hero Project will be selling branded merchandise to help fund future projects related to celebrating Joe DiMaggio.”
