Memorial 2021: Marilyn’s Fans Pay Tribute

This year’s service – commemorating the 59th anniversary of Marilyn’s passing – was hosted by the Marilyn Remembered fan club at Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles. Guest speakers included Juliet Hyde-White (daughter of Marilyn’s Let’s Make Love co-star, Wilfred Hyde-White); Marian Collier (who played Olga from Sweet Sue’s band in Some Like It Hot); George Chakiris (the Oscar-winning star of West Side Story, who also danced with Marilyn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and There’s No Business Like Show Business); Joshua John Miller (grandson of photographer Bruno Bernard); and actress Renee Taylor (who befriended Marilyn at the Actors Studio.)

Messages from Mamie Van Doren, Terry Moore, Kathleen Hughes, Barbara Eden and Ruta Lee were also relayed. You can watch the full service here.

The family archive of photographer Sam Shaw paid their respects to Marilyn on social media.

This poignant tribute was made by Sergio Serrano for Marilyn Mexico, using lines from Marilyn’s poetry, and a haunting 1953 photo by Andre de Dienes. (Sergio also created the graphics for Marilyn Remembered.)

This vibrant image by artist Alejandro Mogollo was inspired by Marilyn’s iconic gold lamé dress.

Returning to the tragic events of August 1962, the New York Times shared this front-page story from their archives.

A series of thoughtful quotes from Marilyn’s friends and other luminaries was posted at A Passion for Marilyn.

And finally, a video tribute using audio from Lee Strasberg’s eulogy – ‘Only Marilyn.’
