Henri Dauman escaped Nazi-occupied Paris for New York as a child, later becoming a photographer for LIFE magazine. He photographed Marilyn on several occasions in the late 1950s, including a preview of Some Like It Hot, with husband Arthur Miller; and at the David di Donatello Awards, where she was honoured for her performance in The Prince and the Showgirl.
Dauman’s remarkable life and career is explored in a documentary, Henri Dauman: Looking Up, now streaming on PBS; and a touring exhibition of the same name, on display until November 13 at the Arts Centre Highland Park, Illinois (about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago.)
