The sequined cocktail dress worn by Marilyn while she sang ‘I Wanna Be Loved By You’ in Some Like It Hot (designed by Orry-Kelly) is among the Hollywood costumes on display in CinéMode, an exhibition exploring the cinematic influences of fashion legend Jean Paul Gaultier, at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris until January 2022.
“Far from an exhaustive history of the relationship between fashion and cinema – the exercise would have been difficult – CinéMode is also a dive into gendered representations, on the big screen and through clothing. The ultra-feminized Hollywood femme fatales, such as Mae West and Marilyn Monroe, parade in their fitted outfits with dizzying necklines.”
The exhibition includes a display honouring CinéMonde, the French fan magazine which circulated throughout the golden age of movies, with two of Marilyn’s covers; and Gaultier’s copy of the 65th Cannes Film Festival poster from 2012, which also featured Marilyn.
