Lil Nas X Follows Marilyn’s ‘Monteroe’ Star

Rapper Lil Nas X pays homage to Marilyn in a new commercial, Queerty reports. In a recent tweet, Nas dubbed himself ‘Marilyn Monteroe,’ after his hit single, ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name.)’

“Lil Nas X has been racking up corporate endorsements the past two years. One of our favorites is the decidedly queer, colourful campaign for Coca-Cola-owned vitaminwater where he gets to wear many fabulous outfits.

The ‘Nourish Every You’ campaign has six campy spots and each ad aligns with one of the vitaminwater flavors, which Coca-Cola hopes will connect with Generation Z in particular.

The unreleased track ‘Give Me One Chance’ is featured in each ad, giving it buzz and familiarity before it’s widely available.

Walking down Hollywood Boulevard in a flowing white dress and earrings, a gust of wind blows his dress up, Marilyn Monroe-style. Impressed, a woman comments, ‘Now that’s one nourished man.'”

He also made a joking reference to Kim Kardashian’s appearance at this year’s Met Gala, when she wore Marilyn’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ dress.

The commercial is, of course, a nod to the famous ‘subway grate scene’ from The Seven Year Itch, as well as Marilyn’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Although she never formally endorsed the drink herself, a vintage photo of Marilyn sipping Coke on the set of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was used in a 2015 ad campaign (see here.)
