Marilyn Brings ‘Jean Howard’s Hollywood’ to Wyoming

The complete archive for photographer Jean Howard – featuring images of Marilyn and many other iconic figures in Hollywood history – is stored at the American Heritage Centre at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where a public exhibition, Jean Howard’s Hollywood, is currently on display until September 30th.

Jean Howard was a former showgirl and starlet turned photographer who captured the stars at work and play during Hollywood’s golden age. She first met Marilyn during a party at her home in 1951. Jean’s husband, the agent Charles Feldman, represented Marilyn for several years. Jean witnessed Marilyn’s rapid rise at close range, attending a preview of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and visiting the set of How to Marry a Millionaire.

In 1954, Jean covered the exclusive party for Marilyn hosted by Twentieth Century-Fox at Romanoff’s restaurant to celebrate completion of The Seven Year Itch, which Feldman produced. That night, Jean borrowed Sam Shaw’s camera to capture Marilyn dancing with Clark Gable. At around this time, she also photographed Marilyn in a formal studio sitting.
