‘The Seven Year Itch’ at the Prince Charles Cinema

Londoners looking for a pre-Valentine’s date movie (or not) should make their way to the Prince Charles Cinema near Leicester Square next Tuesday, February 10, where The Seven Year Itch is showing at 9:00 pm. First released in 1955, the classic comedy will turn 75 this year.

In the quote shown above, Marilyn (as ‘The Girl’) tells neighbour Tom Ewell what women really want. Knowing her penchant for multiple retakes, director Billy Wilder and screenwriter George Axelrod had fully expected this relatively long speech to cause problems. To his delight, however, Marilyn nailed it in just three minutes and a single take, “letter perfect and with an impact that made everyone on the set applaud.”

And now that I’ve got your attention … let’s focus again on this wonderful cinema, which first opened as a theatre in 1962 and has been screening the best in films, old and new, for nearly 70 years. Monroe movies are regularly shown, and a full retrospective was held in 2023.

Incredibly, the Prince Charles Cinema is the only repertory venue still operating in the West End cinema district, and now it’s under threat of eviction. So if you have a UK postcode, please sign this petition to Save The PCC.
