Some Like It Hot is showing at the Prince Charles Cinema (PCC) near London’s Leicester Square on Tuesday, April 8, at 8:35 pm. This beloved venue – the only repertory theatre still operating in the West End cinema district – was recently under threat of eviction (see here.) Following a public outcry, negotiations with the landlord have resumed and the PCC is now more positive that they will be able to get a lease without a break clause. There’s still a long road ahead, however.
“The making of Some Like It Hot was notoriously difficult in the annals of Marilyn Monroe history. Director Billy Wilder had worked with Marilyn previously and whilst in 1958 he found her to be more fragile than ever, he also recognised that as an artist she was more brilliant than ever … From the moment of her unforgettable entrance in a puff of steam as she walks along the side of a train, to singing ‘I Wanna Be Loved By You,’ through every word and move, it was all classic Marilyn. Co-stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis and the supporting cast were equally wonderful, working from a brilliantly clever script written by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond … Marilyn was not nominated for an Oscar, but she did take home the Golden Globe as Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. If there was any validity to her initial concern that playing Sugar Kane was taking her back to kinds of roles she played in her early years at Fox, she proved that as an actress she had evolved to the point where she could transcend the caricature and turn in a performance rich with emotion and sensitivity in addition to the wit and sex appeal she always had.”
