‘The Asphalt Jungle’ in Paris

The Asphalt Jungle (1950), which gave Marilyn her first major role, is showing at the Latin Quarter Filmothèque in Paris on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 pm. The film’s French title translates as ‘When the City Sleeps.’

“A superb Sterling Hayden, and Marilyn Monroe displaying the widest range of emotions in a film noir that inaugurated the heist film subgenre: John Huston examines the urban jungle and its pulsating rhythms, dissecting with biting wit the flaws of his characters trapped in a cold and empty world. And at the same time, he casts a social commentary on the pathetic condition of the gangster.” – Cinémathèque Française
