Marilyn Goes Blonde (and Beyond) in France

A Marilyn movie retrospective has opened at the Lumière Institute in Lyon this week. The series will include a special screening of River of No Return at the Lumière Villa, which houses a museum honouring the achievements of Auguste and Louis Lumière, ‘fathers of cinema’, on Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 pm.

  • CLASH BY NIGHT: June 6, June 24, July 13 – A little-known work by Fritz Lang with an exceptional female cast: Barbara Stanwyck and the young Marilyn Monroe.
  • NIAGARA: June 21, July 1 – ‘A superb criminal symphony’ (Patrick Brion)

  • GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: June 7, June 23, July 11 – A whimsical musical comedy with burlesque touches.
  • RIVER OF NO RETURN: June 10, June 16, July 5 – Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum and CinemaScope: a captivating western of adventure and love.

  • BUS STOP: June 11, June 26, July 14 – Marilyn Monroe deploys her full range of acting skills to play Cherie, a cabaret singer with Hollywood dreams.
  • THE MISFITS: June 25, July 3, July 19 – The swansong of Hollywood’s golden age.

Another retrospective, Marilyn Monroe: Icône Éternelle, has opened at the Rex Cinema in Veules-les-Roses, Normandy. And at 6pm on Saturday, June 20, jazz singer Isabelle Seleskovitch will perform a selection of Marilyn’s music before an 8pm screening of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Meanwhile, three Monroe classics – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, River of No Return, and The Seven Year Itch – are coming to Pathé Cinemas across France.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is showing at the Dietrich Cinema in Poitiers on Monday, June 8 at 8pm. The screening will be preceded by a reception and presentation, and if you can’t make it, Blondes is showing again on June 27 and 30 – plus, The Seven Year Itch is coming on June 16 and 21.
