Marilyn Goes From Blonde to Hot in Arnhem

A centennial tribute featuring Marilyn’s two finest comedies is coming to the rooftop of Focus Film Theatre in the Dutch city of Arnhem, as part of an open-air cinema series.

“One of the mysteries that has continued to haunt Marilyn Monroe long after her tragic and untimely death is whether she wasn’t much smarter than her image led us to believe. In any case: with her billowing white dress, platinum blonde locks, and sensual gaze, Marilyn Monroe is undeniably one of the greatest film icons of all time. As a tribute to Monroe, born in 1926, we are screening two summery screwball comedies in which she is the radiant and somewhat cunning epicentre.”

  • GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: July 18 at 10:15 pm; July 28 at 10:10 pm – “This musical comedy follows showgirl Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe), who is engaged to the wealthy Gus Esmond. However, his father does not trust her and calls off the wedding. Disappointed, she travels by boat to France with her colleague Dorothy (Jane Russell)—a journey full of complications surrounding adultery, mistaken identity, and a diamond tiara that may or may not have been stolen. The film is based on the 1949 Broadway musical of the same name, which was inspired by the novel … The song ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,’ sung by Monroe in the film, became an icon in the film world …”
  • SOME LIKE IT HOT: August 21 at 9:20 pm; September 10 at 9:00 pm – “Take the dry humour of Billy Wilder, the deadpan faces of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, the sex appeal of Marilyn Monroe, add a storyline unfolding at breakneck speed, and the result is the hilarious screwball comedy Some Like it Hot. Two jazz musicians witness a bloodbath between rival gangs and flee the city, afraid of being recognized by the gangsters. They go into hiding in an all-female orchestra on its way to Florida. The men try to keep their identities secret, but that proves difficult when singer Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) steals both their hearts.”
