Some Like It Hot is showing at Cinema Akil in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on July 24-25, 28, and 30, as part of a Summer of Classics series.

And from July 25 – August 16, Some Like It Hot is showing at the Golden Horse Classic Film Festival in Taipei, Taiwan, as part of a retrospective for director Billy Wilder, named after the film’s closing line: Nobody’s Perfect.
“Set during Prohibition, the story follows Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis as musicians struggling in underground bars who witness a gang killing. To escape, they disguise themselves as women and infiltrate an all-female band. Tony Curtis falls for the sexy lead singer Marilyn Monroe, while the tall and imposing Jack Lemmon is pursued by a wealthy older man. Unexpectedly, these two love games not only become real but also intertwine, culminating in a hilarious and ingenious ending.
With its perfect script structure, profound satire, outstanding performances, and astonishing gender awareness, Some Like It Hot was selected by the American Film Institute as the best comedy of all time. Besides the director’s brilliant and humorous writing, Jack Lemmon’s amazing acting prowess became a must-learn model for all comedians afterward. The innocent sensuality of Marilyn Monroe, unearthed by Billy Wilder in The Seven Year Itch, continued to resonate in this film. Despite numerous mishaps during filming, the result was a brilliant performance, earning her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.”
The Golden Horse festival paid tribute to Wilder’s leading lady back in 2024, with a programme entitled Marilyn Monroe: Birth of a Superstar.
“The world calls Marilyn Monroe a blonde bombshell, but often overlooks her best performances, especially Billy Wilder’s The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot, which were tailor-made for her. Her ‘innocence,’ which is the opposite of ‘sexiness,’ was able to coexist in one person, which is why she is irreplaceable.
This chemical reaction made The Seven Year Itch a cornerstone of ‘little man comedies’; the haphazard pairings in Some Like It Hot inadvertently promoted diversity and rebellion.”
