Marilyn Goes From Pleasantville, NY to Winterset, Iowa

A month-long tribute, ‘Marilyn Monroe at 100‘, is coming to the Jacob Burns Film Centre in Pleasantville, New York this week.

“One of the most iconic figures in Hollywood history, the iconography and mythos of Marilyn Monroe have often obscured the immense craft and artistry of the actor herself. From comedies like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like it Hot, to dramatic turns in films like Niagara and The Misfits, Monroe was a performer as dynamic as she was versatile; an undeniable talent who, despite her tragic death at age 36, left behind a truly formidable body of work.

In honour of Marilyn Monroe’s centennial, the Jacob Burns Film Centre will present screenings of five of her finest performances, which will be complemented by Cinema Studies classes in collaboration with the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.”

  • GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: August 25, 30, plus a September 10 screening and lecture by NYU graduate Jeff Hughes
  • NIAGARA: September 1, 6 – “Monroe’s turn as the diabolical and scheming Rose is at once fascinating and frightening, a performance which paints a powerful portrait of human sexuality and passion.”
  • THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH: September 8, 13 – “One of Marilyn Monroe’s most enduringly iconic performances”
  • SOME LIKE IT HOT: September 15, 17, 20 – September 17 screening includes lecture by NYU professor and filmmaker David K. Irving
  • THE MISFITS: September 22, 24, 27 – September 24 screening includes lecture by NYU PhD candidate Cameron Olsen

Meanwhile, Marilyn’s silver-screen classics are coming to the historic Iowa Theatre in Winterset every Thursday in September at 7:00 pm.
