Some Like It Hot is coming to Schuur in Haarlem on Saturday, August 29 at 4:00 pm, as a preview of the Haarlem Classic Film Festival. (You may recall that the MM100 Festival celebrating Marilyn’s centenary was held in Haarlem in June.)
“Billy Wilder’s hilarious masterpiece, in which two musicians disguise themselves as female orchestra members to stay out of the hands of the mafia, features not only the handsomest boy in town (and a great actor to boot) in Tony Curtis, but also the radiant sex symbol Marilyn Monroe at the top of her game, and one of the most versatile comedians, Jack Lemmon. Combine that with great one-liners and dialogue, a gang of sinister mobsters, a glamorous seaside location in the vibrant twenties, and a dazzling selection of songs, and you get screwball comedy at its finest.
Some Like It Hot will be screened on 35mm—the analogue film format that was the standard in cinema screenings for more than a century—as a preview of the festival. To enhance the nostalgic feeling, we begin with a pre-programme featuring commercials, trailers, and news items from yesteryear.”
And as the Haarlem Classic Film Festival gets underway, a 4K restoration of Some Like It Hot is showing at Filmkoepel on Tuesday, September 8 at 4:00 pm; and elsewhere in the Netherlands, Some Like It Hot is showing at Kinepolis in Rotterdam on Saturday, August 29, and Monday, August 31.
And finally, a three-film tribute, Marilyn Monroe in the Spotlight, is coming to Gigant in Apeldoorn next week.
- SOME LIKE IT HOT: Tuesday, September 1 at 7:30 pm – “With Some Like It Hot, the shrewd Billy Wilder gave the screwball comedy genre even more pace with absurd ping-pong dialogue and even more sexual charge, and turned the storyline into a fast-paced joke revolving around the (American) lust for money and fame. Despite problems during filming – Monroe was hazy and seemed entangled in numerous personal issues – her performance is one of the most memorable achievements of her career: Monroe proved to be a full-blooded comedienne.” (Introduced by film essayist Basje Boer)
- GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: September 4, 8, 13, 16 – “In perhaps Monroe’s most popular film, she plays the glamorous blonde showgirl Lorelei with verve. Lorelei is determined to marry her wealthy fiancé so that true love is not tainted by financial worries. Her friend Dorothy (Jane Russell) would rather follow her heart. The comical escapades of the two polar opposites are interspersed with stylish, surreal dance numbers.”
- THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH: September 6, 15, 18 – “Billy Wilder, the master of comedy, knows how to make the most of Monroe’s sparkling wit, effervescent personality, and captivating beauty. The Seven Year Itch features the iconic scene in which Monroe’s dress blows up over the grate of a New York subway station.”
