Marilyn Brings a Dramatic Double to Bryn Mawr

Two of Marilyn’s finest dramatic roles are coming to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute in Pennsylvania, as part of a tribute series, ‘We Love Marilyn Monroe.’ Like Marilyn herself, this historic venue is now in its centennial year; and copies of the print zine, Movie Jawn, will be available in the lobby. (Marilyn’s iconic film noir, Niagara was featured in the June issue as part of a feature on cinematic hotels – with a limited-edition door hanger celebrating another Monroe melodrama, Don’t Bother to Knock.)

“If anyone ever embodied stardom, it was Marilyn. To mark her centenary, we’re celebrating two key performances—her first starring role and her tragic final turn.”

  • NIAGARA (4K): Thursday, October 8 at 7:00 pm – “This candy-colored, psycho-sexual noir left no doubt that Marilyn Monroe (appearing in her first top-billed part) was a star. A couple’s honeymoon at Niagara Falls takes a treacherous turn when they take a cabin next to tantalising temptress Rose Loomis and the husband (Joseph Cotten) she’s determined to do in. This screening will be introduced by Turner Classic Movies writer Hannah Jack, who will stick around for a post-film conversation, moderated by Sankeerthna Vedamtam, BMFI.”
  • THE MISFITS (4K): Tuesday, October 13 – Cinema Classics Seminar at 6:30 pm hosted by Rachel McCabe, and followed by screening at 7:15 pm.  Seating for screening-only attendees will begin at 7:00 pm. “A Reno divorcée falls in with a community of hard-luck cowboys hustling for survival in this Arthur Miller-penned revisionist Western. With multiple resonances to her own life, Marilyn Monroe’s final performance displayed her maturing dramatic talent … Set against the changing cultural landscape of the late 1950s and early 1960s, the film’s themes ask viewers to consider the changes in the American Dream.”
