- GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: 2:00 pm – “Female characters who separate romantic love from the search for a husband were a common theme in the 1920s, as illustrated by Anita Loos’s novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Howard Hawks’s Technicolor adaptation features two emancipated showgirls on a trip paid for by a millionaire fiancé. Humour and keen social observation characterise the roles and dialogue of the two stars, who are clearly in cahoots.”
- SOME LIKE IT HOT: 3:45 pm – “The delightful duo of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe’s commanding presence on screen, and the magic happens. Mistaken identities, situational comedy, expressive gestures, snappy dialogue, and a brilliant sense of concision make Some Like It Hot a gem of a comedy. Wilder plants barbs everywhere, targeting Prohibition-era America, the Mafia, the FBI, wielding the art of deception with dexterity and, above all, infectious relish. A lighthearted variation on cross-dressing, and by far on homosexuality, Some Like It Hot is also a deeper reflection on machismo and sexuality, strikingly modern.”
