Greenblatt’s, the legendary delicatessen and restaurant at 8017 Sunset Boulevard (on the corner of Laurel Avenue), is said to be closing permanently after 95 years in business, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It opened in 1926, the same year that Marilyn was born in Los Angeles. She and second husband Joe DiMaggio were said to enjoy Greenblatt’s hot pastrami and its mustard-brushed rye bread. On December 19th, 1953 – the same day she accepted the Miss Press Club award – Marilyn wrote an $8.50 cheque to Greenblatt’s, which was resold for $5,120 at Julien’s Auctions in 2017.
The reasons behind Greenblatt’s closure are unknown, but it’s thought to be another victim of the ongoing hard times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
