Bob Mackie: The Art of Marilyn

A lavish new book, The Art of Bob Mackie, celebrates the most glamorous of American designers, who created Cher’s unforgettable Oscar dress in 1988, and Madonna’s Monroe-inspired look for the 1991 ceremony. Bob began his career as an assistant to Hollywood costumer Jean-Louis, creating a design sketch for what would become Marilyn’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ dress.

Although he wasn’t initially told who the dress was for, Bob must have had an inkling as his drawings were very Monroe-esque, and his boss was already working on her latest movie. One of Bob’s other sketches from Something’s Got to Give – either for Marilyn or co-star Cyd Charisse – is also featured on the book’s contents page, although like the film itself, the design was later shelved.
