70 Years Ago: Marilyn at the Henrietta Awards

On January 26, 1952, Marilyn received her first major film industry honour – the Henrietta Award for Best Young Box Office Personality – in a ceremony hosted by the International Press Club at the Del Mar Club on Ocean Front Drive in Santa Monica. The red Oleg Cassini gown she wore (having already modelled it in various 1951 photo shoots – see here), seems to be held up by some miracle of gravity.

The latest issue of French e-zine Crazy For You explores various aspects of the auspicious evening, from her photo shoot with LIFE magazine’s Dean Loomis among fellow attendees – including future co-stars Mitzi Gaynor and Tony Curtis – to the draw-string bag she toted. Meanwhile, a 1952 portrait of Marilyn in a different Cassini gown (of which we’ll see more later) graces the cover of a new zine, Dress Code, in an issue devoted to the designer.
