Composer Marc Shaiman has confirmed that long-held plans to revive NBC’s SMASH as a Broadway musical are going ahead, with original cast member Megan Hilty and producer Steven Spielberg joining a reading, with a stage revival planned ‘for sooner than later,’ as Playbill reports. (Shaiman has also written a new score for the upcoming musical, Some Like It Hot.)
“The show, which followed the creation of a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, was cancelled in 2013, but rumors surrounding a realized production of the musical at the center of the story, Bombshell, have persisted through Actors Fund concerts and social media campaigns. In 2020, the project was finally confirmed to be in development, and a reading was held May 20, 2022. Now centred in the ‘SMASH multiverse’ the reading included onscreen Marilyn Megan Hilty alongside Broadway favourites including Brooks Ashmanskas, Beth Leavel, Krysta Rodriguez, and Bonnie Milligan.”
