The Misfits is showing at the Grenoble Cinémathèque on Monday, May 11, at 7:30 pm, as part of ‘Folie!’, a season exploring how madness is depicted in movies. In the case of The Misfits, the characters’ turmoil seems to mirror the offscreen struggles of Marilyn and her co-stars.
“It is in Reno, Nevada, under a blazing sun, that Roslyn obtains her divorce, accompanied by a new friend. Curious and sensitive, she agrees to follow Guido and Gay, a cowboy somewhat battered by life, on a journey that will take them to the heart of the desert, where the last wild horses hide.
When Marilyn Monroe agreed to star in this film, whose screenplay was written by her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, she could not have imagined the ordeal that awaited the entire crew led by John Huston. In stark black and white, the star’s face radiates beauty and melancholy, for the last time. Heartbreaking and essential viewing.”
The Misfits is showing again at Espace Sorano in Vincennes (near Paris) on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:30 pm – preceded by drinks at 7 pm, and followed by a discussion hosted by Marie-Camille Bouchindomme, co-author of Blondes Mythiques (2012.)
