An ‘Eye’ for Marilyn in Amsterdam

A series of six Monroe films is showing at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam from May 21 until June 7. And at 6:30 pm on Monday, June 1 – Marilyn’s 100th birthday – a screening of The Misfits will be introduced by film essayist Basje Boer.

ALL ABOUT EVE: May 21, May 27, June 2 – “Prize-winning, legendary classic about an aging theatre diva (Bette Davis) whose status is threatened by the young, ambitious Eve (Anne Baxter). Also features Marilyn Monroe in one of her early roles.”
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: May 22, May 28, June 3 – “In perhaps Marilyn Monroe’s most popular film she enthusiastically plays the glamorous blonde showgirl Lorelei who is determined to marry her wealthy beau so that ‘pure love isn’t sullied by money worries.'”

NIAGARA: May 23, May 29, June 2 – “Romantic thriller from 1953, the year when Marilyn Monroe made her big breakthrough. She plays a unfaithful wife wanting to ditch her depressed husband, with the sensational waterfalls of the title acting as a backdrop.”

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH: May 24, May 30, June 4 – “Billy Wilder’s first comedy with Marilyn Monroe is full of juicy allusions to adultery. The film obviously struck a chord with the narrow-minded American public of the early 1950s.”

SOME LIKE IT HOT: May 25, May 31, June 4, June 6 – “Mix Billy Wilder’s dry humour, the deadpan faces of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, the sex appeal of Marilyn Monroe and a fast-paced storyline and what you get is the hilarious screwball comedy and gender-bending classic Some Like It Hot.”

THE MISFITS: May 26, June 1, June 7 – “Four misfits meet in the desert city of Reno, Nevada: three roaming cowboys and the recently divorced, disillusioned Roslyn. Which of the men will capture her heart? In what was to be her last film, Marilyn Monroe displayed all her talents as an actress.”
