Marilyn’s London Noir: From Regent Street to Croydon

Clash By Night is showing at the Regent Street Cinema in London’s West End on Tuesday, May 26, at 1 pm – and come back for Don’t Bother to Knock at 1 pm on Monday, June 1 – Marilyn’s 100th birthday. As the first ‘Monday Matinee’ of the month, this screening will be preceded by a short recital on the venue’s original 1936 Compton organ – among the last still working in the UK.

And south of the river, Marilyn’s last film noir – Niagara – is showing at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon on Tuesday, June 2, at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

“This month is the 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth, and we are screening an early film of hers, made when Hollywood was still working out what her ‘type’ should be. In this, her first colour film, she plays a femme fatale. Two married couples arrive at Niagara Falls, and after a mix-up over the cabin they have booked, they become acquainted. One couple, George and Rose Loomis (Joseph Cotten and Monroe) are unhappily married, and Rose and her lover Ted have a plan to murder George. A classic film noir, even if it is in colour, and it made Marilyn a star.”
